Dubai International Airport has retained its position as the world’s second-busiest airport, while Atlanta remains at the top of the global rankings. The latest figures also show Istanbul moving ahead of London Heathrow in July, adding another twist to the competition between major aviation hubs.
Dubai has once again secured its place among the world’s busiest airports, ranking second globally in the finalized 2025 rankings released by Airports Council International (ACI).
The latest figures underline Dubai International Airport’s continued importance as a global aviation hub, connecting passengers from across the Middle East, Asia, Europe and other major markets.
At the top of the list, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its position as the world’s busiest airport in 2025. Atlanta handled around 106.3 million passengers during the year, despite recording a 1.6% decline in passenger traffic compared with the previous year.
Dubai’s strong position comes despite growing competition among some of the world’s biggest airports.
Istanbul Moves Ahead of Heathrow
The competition became even more interesting in July, when Istanbul Airport moved ahead of London Heathrow in monthly passenger traffic.
The shift highlights how quickly the global aviation landscape is changing. Istanbul has emerged as a major connecting point between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, while Heathrow continues to operate as one of Europe’s most important international gateways.
For Dubai, the latest rankings are another sign of the strength of its aviation sector. Dubai International has long benefited from its location between major global markets, making it an important stop for international travelers and a key hub for long-haul flights.
The airport is also closely tied to Dubai’s wider economy. Tourism, business travel and international trade all contribute to passenger demand, while the city’s growing reputation as a destination for business and leisure continues to support aviation activity.
Global Airport Competition Is Getting Tougher
The latest numbers show that being among the world’s busiest airports is no longer just about passenger volumes. Airports are competing for international connections, transfer passengers and access to fast-growing travel markets.
Atlanta continues to lead the global rankings, while Dubai remains firmly in second place. At the same time, Istanbul’s rise shows that the rankings can change quickly as passenger demand shifts between regions.
For Dubai International Airport, maintaining its second-place position is a significant achievement. With international travel continuing to expand and competition between major aviation hubs becoming stronger, the coming years could bring even more movement at the top of the global airport rankings.
For now, however, Atlanta remains the world’s busiest airport, Dubai holds second place, and Istanbul is making its presence felt among the biggest aviation hubs in the world.
